Survey suggests limited progress has been made in certain asthma care measures over the last decade
A comparison of the published findings from the 1998 survey of Asthma in America (current asthma survey, ≥16 years of age) and the current AIM survey (current asthma survey, ≥16 years of age) in 2009 finds little difference in many aspects of asthma care and management.
- 25% of patients with asthma reported missing work or school in 1998, compared with 20% in 2009
- In 1998, 22% of patients with asthma reported that their health limited the kind or amount of work they did compared with 19% in 2009
- In 1998, 17% of patients with asthma found that asthma limited their activities compared with 14% in 2009
- The rate of past year hospitalization for asthma (7%) was identical in the 2 surveys completed a decade apart
- The rate of past year use of emergency rooms for asthma was incrementally higher in 1998 (19%) than in 2009 (16%)
- The proportion of adult asthma patients who had any acute care visits for asthma in the past 12 months was 36% in 1998 and 34% in 2009
