Helping You Take AIM at Asthma

The burden of asthma can shape your life. Not only do you suffer the pain, worry and discomfort of not being able to breathe properly, but you also may have trouble taking part in everyday activities. You may have to curb your exercise and physical exertion. In some cases asthma episodes can be so severe that patients fear for their lives.

So it's no wonder that more people with asthma may "often" or "sometimes" feel depressed, fearful, isolated, angry and embarrassed than people without asthma.

How is asthma defined?

Asthma is a disorder of the lungs whose symptoms recur. It is characterized by obstruction of the airways, overreaction of the bronchial tubes, and an underlying inflammation. This inflammation causes repeated episodes of coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness. The airway obstruction can usually be relaxed either spontaneously or through treatment.

About 8 percent of the adult U.S. population surveyed has current asthma, according to the AIM survey.
